Many Drivers and Passengers Lose Their Lives In Deadly Intersections. For most of us, traveling by car is a daily activity. We use our cars to go to work, to take our kids to school, and to run errands. It can be easy to underestimate the dangers we face as we drive each day. There are millions of cars on the road at any given moment—and, tragically, many drivers and passengers lose their lives every day in motor vehicle accidents.
In some areas, there are intersections that are known to be dangerous, especially during times of increased traffic, such as holiday weekends. They may have poor visibility, sharp turns, or other types of dangers that drivers may encounter. Raising awareness of these dangerous intersections will allow drivers to prepare accordingly, and, hopefully, avoid deadly accidents.
In New York, the most dangerous intersection is located in Brooklyn. Information from Badintersections.com revealed that the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Tillary Street reports far more accidents than any other intersection in New York. This is where traffic meets from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Manhattan Bridge. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, was analyzed to determine which intersection in each state poses the greatest risk to drivers.
In New York, roughly 425 accidents have occurred at the Flatbush Avenue and Tillary Street intersection since 2012. Another researcher estimated that 180 accidents occur at this junction every year. Some of the accidents are deadly—in 2013, a motorist turned left and hit a motorcyclist, killing him.
Tillary Street spans roughly 9 blocks between Navy Street in DUMBO and Cadman Plaza West in Brooklyn Heights. The roadway was included in New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan, which aims to reduce the amount of traffic deaths.
Though the Brooklyn intersection is quite dangerous, it is not one of the most dangerous intersections in the United States. According to Time Magazine study, the most dangerous intersection is located in Bensalem, Pennsylvania.
Other intersections that also reported multiple deaths include:
The most dangerous intersections in each state are:
If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident due to the negligence of another driver, you may be entitled to damages. You must show that the negligent driver breached a duty owed to you, and that this breach caused you harm. You must also provide clear evidence of the harm you have suffered. Though this may seem like a straightforward task, pursuing a legal claim for a motor vehicle accident can be complicated. Therefore, it is best to hire an experienced personal injury attorney to represent your interests.
All drivers on public roadways have a duty to operate their vehicles in a manner that is safe and reasonable under the circumstances.
This duty may be breached in a number of ways—driving while distracted, eating and driving, driving too fast in poor weather, and driving while intoxicated, for example.
The types of damages available in a motor vehicle accident claim vary depending on the facts of the case. Damages may include:
Either some or all of the above listed damages may be available in a claim.
There are deadlines in place that limit how long an injured victim has to file a personal injury claim. Therefore, it is essential to meet with an attorney as soon as possible to ensure your rights are protected.
