Run-off-the-road collisions involve a driver veering off the roadway and onto the side of the road. These types of accidents are often deadly, and in fact, they cause about one out of every five car accident-related deaths.
In about 90 percent of these collisions, the driver was speeding. Many run-off-the-road accidents are also caused by drunk driving, texting or otherwise using a smartphone while driving, or falling asleep at the wheel.
Fixed object crashes are collisions in which a driver leaves the road and hits some object that is on the side of the road. In the largest percentage of these crashes, the object that gets hit is a tree. The next most likely object to be hit in one of these accidents is a utility pole.
While safe driving is always a good way to cut down on the risk of a car crash, the reality is that many people will make driving-related mistakes, and even minor mistakes can have tragic consequences.
The best method of reducing the number of fixed object collisions would be to eliminate as many roadside objects as possible, or to avoid placing objects near the road in the first place. Short of this, barriers of some sort can reduce the severity of many of these types of crashes.
