Hit-and-run crashes have been increasing across the country, according to AAA. It is illegal to flee the scene of a crash, but many drivers choose to do just that. Sadly, when many drivers flee the scene of a crash, they will never face justice for their crime. The number of arrests made, even in deadly hit-and-run crashes, is shockingly low. Many states have increased penalties for leaving the scene of a crash as a form of deterrent, and in New York, an early alert system is in place to allow for police to alert the public about hit-and-run incidents and recruit assistance in locating and identifying the perpetrator and their vehicle.
It is often the case that a hit-and-run driver is panicking when they flee, often because they realize that they are in violation of another law. For example, these drivers are frequently under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol when they leave the crash site. In other situations, the drivers might not have a driver’s license. These individuals know that they are facing serious penalties if they are caught.
