Injuries on Indian Rocks causeway
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – According to Tbreporter.com, a driver lost control of his vehicle causing it to flip over on the Indian Rocks Causeway. The man suffered critical injuries in the crash and died two days later.
The victim was identified as 73-year-old Mr. Kobel of Largo. Kobel was flown to the Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he was treated for his life-threatening injuries.
Reports indicate that the victim was traveling in a 2008 Lincoln Towncar westbound when he tried to pass a vehicle that was on the right of the roadway and then moves back into the left lane. When Kobel attempted to move back into the left lane, he lost control over the vehicle.
Kobel’s vehicle appears to have skidded and then gone up the side of the median. The Towncar then struck two trees and flipped over before stopping on its side on top of a fallen tree. The police say that speed was likely a factor in the incident, but that the driver does not appear to have been impaired.
Rollover crashes are some of the most serious collisions on the roadway and cause a high percentage of traffic-related fatalities even though they make up a small percentage of total crashes. Many of these accidents only involve a single vehicle in what is referred to as a run-off-the-road collision. Speed is a factor in the vast majority of run-off-the-road accidents. While rollovers are most likely to occur in taller vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, any car can overturn in the right set of circumstances. It is important to wear a seatbelt to avoid being ejected from a vehicle, which often happens when cars roll over.
