Suny Cortland student dies
DRYDEN, N.Y. — One woman is dead, and another is facing serious criminal charges after a drunk driving accident killed a female co-ed in Upstate New York. Syracuse.com reported that the fatal drunk driving collision occurred between 3:30 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. The woman officers arrested for vehicular manslaughter and other charges was driving and the deceased, a 26-year-old woman from the Bronx, was a passenger. The investigation into the accident continues even though officers placed the driver under arrest.
Tompkins County sheriff’s deputies responded to the single-car accident on Livermore Road in Dryden a short distance away from Tompkins County Community College, last Wednesday. The deputies’ preliminary investigation revealed that a 21-year-old woman from Brooklyn was heading north on Livermore Road in a Kia Soul when the vehicle went off of the right side of the road and slammed into a tree. Authorities rushed the driver and passenger to Upstate Hospital located in Syracuse for emergency care. Sadly, the 26-year-old SUNY Cortland student succumbed to her injuries.
Two days after the wreck, sheriff’s deputies arrested the 21-year-old driver. She now faces second- degree vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, speeding, and unsafe lane change charges. The accused faced arraignment in Dryden Town Court. The court released her after the hearing.
The woman who died in the collision was a recent graduate of Tompkins County Community College. Reports say she was matriculating in SUNY Cortland’s Graphic Design program. The woman was an active member of SUNY Cortland’s Multicultural Life and Diversity Office. Officials did not indicate that the driver was a student at either school.
First responders from several agencies assisted with the investigation. In addition to the Thompkins County sheriff’s office, the New York State Police, Campus Police from Thompkins County Community College, Dryden Fire and Ambulance, as well as the Dryden Department of Transportation.
