QUEENS, N.Y. — The New York Daily News reported that a 21-year-old man died in a car crash in South Ozone Park, Queens. Investigators say that the man who died was acquainted with the unlicensed driver who killed him: they had been friends in high school. The unlicensed driver, according to police, ran a stop sign at the intersection of 107th Avenue and 109th Street in South Ozone Park. The fatal crash occurred on Sunday morning around 1:30. Surveillance video from a camera fixed on a home situated near the intersection captured the horrible incident. Police arrested the 20-year-old unlicensed motorist at the scene.
The dramatic surveillance video recorded by a camera placed near the scene of the accident captured the last seconds of a man’s life. The video clearly shows a sedan traveling at a high rate of speed on 109th Street and blowing through the stop sign at the corner of 109th and 107th Avenue. The stop sign is visible in the video. The car that ran the stop sign, later determined to be a 2020 Nissan Altima, showed no signs of braking as the vehicle entered the intersection. The vehicle was going so fast that it appeared to bounce. The 20-year-old unlicensed driver of the Altima appears to be trying to avoid the crash by pulling to the left, but the collision was unavoidable.
The two cars involved in the crash collided with remarkable force. Both of the vehicles spun into other cars on the opposite side of the intersection from the stop sign. Photos of the accident scene taken several hours after the devastating crash showed debris on the sidewalk from the victim’s car and showed a parked car had been severely damaged as well.
First responders raced the victim to Jamaica Hospital, where he died. Staff at the hospital said that the victim sustained severe head trauma in the crash. The victim was only five blocks away from his home when the crash happened.
