QUEENS, NEW YORK – According to a news report posted on cbslocal.com, a family from Queens is mourning the tragic death of a father and husband who was struck and killed by a vehicle while changing his vehicle’s tire along the Long Island Expressway. The victim was heading to pick up his wife, who was finishing her work at a local nursing home, when he had a flat tire.
According to police statements, the victim was simply trying to change a flat tire during the middle of the night when he was hit by a vehicle. The deadly accident occurred around midnight last Monday. According to the investigating police officers, the victim stopped his vehicle along the left shoulder of Long Island Expressway westbound by the College Point Boulevard exit. While the victim was changing his tire, a driver in a Tesla struck him. the victim was transported to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he tragically died.
The tragic collision is inspiring experts to warn the public about roadside repairs. One expert stated that changing a tire roadside should depend on the circumstances and the roadway conditions. For example, many roadways do not have a road shoulder that is wide enough to use safely.
Police reported that the Tesla driver remained at the accident scene and is not facing criminal charges at this time. The NYPD’s Highway Collision Squad is conducting the accident investigation.
