New York State Police troopers shut down the eastbound side of the Southern State Parkway on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, in an attempt to save the lives of four teenagers trapped in a vehicle after a terrible crash. The preliminary report explaining the accident filed by the responding state troopers indicates that the 18-year-old driver of a Toyota Sienna minivan operated easterly on the Southern State Parkway and, when the vehicle was in the area of Exit 35 in Babylon, the Sienna slammed into the rear of a Toyota Camry. The 18-year-old operator of the Sienna lost control over the car. The car left the roadway and slammed into a tree. The driver of the Camry pulled over safely.
First responders arrived and extricated the driver. Medics transported the driver, who was from South Ozone Park in Queens, to Good Samaritan Hospital. Doctors at Good Samaritan declared the 18-year-old driver deceased. Meanwhile, state troopers shut down the parkway so that a medical helicopter could land and transport at least one injured teenager to a trauma center.
Two teens were listed in critical condition after they were extricated from the wreckage. They are a 16-year-old female from South Ozone Park and a 15-year-old male from Jamaica. A 19-year-old male from South Ozone Park received medical treatment as well. Their current medical conditions are unknown.
