STATEN ISLAND, NY – According to nydailynews.com, an accident deemed an “absolute horror” happened on Elson Street at Lamberts Lane in Staten Island, New York. The hit-and-run driver struck a couple who were riding in their Mercedes-Benz, and the collision tragically killed a woman and severely injured her husband. The NYPD Highway Patrol is conducting the accident and criminal investigation.
According to the NYPD Highway Patrol, the hit-and-run driver ran away from the accident scene and then eventually turned himself in to law enforcement officers. The hit-and-run driver was traveling northbound along Elson Street in a 2020 Honda Accord when he struck the couple’s 2009 Mercedes-Benz that was heading eastbound along Lamberts Lane in Bulls Head. The collision happened at approximately 6:15 pm on Tuesday, according to police reports. At the time of the report, it was not immediately apparent which driver had the right of way at the time of the fatal accident.
According to the news report, the Honda driver ditched his wrecked motor vehicle and then ran away from the accident scene. The news report states that the Honda’s front end was almost completely “obliterated” by the collision.
Emergency medical service hurried the front-seat passenger in the Mercedes-Benz, a 68-year-old woman, to Richmond University Medical Center. However, she died as a result of severe accident-related injuries. Her husband, a 70-year-old man, was driving at the time of the accident. He was also transported to the Richmond University Medical Center, where he is currently listed as critical. He sustained serious head trauma.
According to law enforcement, the Honda driver surrendered himself to police at the 121st Police Precinct Station House about 30 minutes from the accident. Criminal charges against the hit-and-run driver are pending.
The couple was only a mile from their home when they were involved in this fatal motor vehicle accident. The accident is currently under investigation.
