Fatal Accident on the Gowanus Expressway
STATEN ISLAND, NY – A news article on silive.com reports that a fatal motor vehicle accident along the Gowanus Expressway tragically claimed the life of a 30-year-old Staten Island woman. The accident photos published on SILive.com show the woman’s car was almost obliterated.
Emergency medical first responders arrived at the accident scene at approximately 11:20 PM. According to an NYPD press statement, 911 callers told dispatchers that a severe accident occurred in the Gowanus Expressway’s Staten-Island bound lanes at the 92nd Street exit. The fatal accident on the Gowanus Expressway tragically claimed the life of a 30-year-old woman from Greenridge.
Police stated that the victim was discovered unresponsive and unconscious in the passenger seat of a black 535i BMW. The BMW was severely damaged at the front passenger side. Photos of the accident damage showed that the collision was so bad that the BMW’s passenger side looked completely destroyed. The BMW’s passenger side door and the tire were missing.
The BMW’s driver, a man from Meiers Corners, was arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. The man allegedly refused to take a breathalyzer test. The man is facing several other criminal charges.
According to the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, the BMW’s driver hit the rear of a stopped Freightliner semi-truck. The 18-wheeler was being driven by a 46-year-old male, who was not injured in the accident. Both of the motor vehicles were kept at the accident scene, h investigators worked the accident scene.
The news report states that the victim is the girlfriend of the driver. The driver was arraigned, and he was released on his own recognizance in connection to the accident.
