BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An overnight crash involving a single car on Kings Highway in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn rocked the sleeping neighborhood around 3:30 in the morning. Nbcnewyork.com reported that a Honda Accord was traveling at what is believed to be excessive speeds, wrapped itself around a light pole and burst into flames. A Good Samaritan raced to the scene and managed to douse the fire shortly before police and fire personnel arrived. Firefighters extricated the two severely injured men. The two now remain in critical condition in a New York hospital. Police continue to investigate, but suspect the driver was speeding and then lost control of the vehicle.
A surveillance camera captured the dramatic scene as it unfolded. The video taken from the private surveillance camera shows that a black Honda Civic collided with a light pole on Kings Highway and then burst into flames. The subsequent fireball lit up the pre-dawn sky. The Civic folded at the impact point with the pole; the pole barely displayed a scratch except for some soot darkening the pole. Somehow, a Good Samaritan managed to put out the flames, enabling first responders to work to free the trapped motorists hurriedly.
Residents say that Kings Highway is stretch of road on which people are known to drive excessively fast. The speed limit at the location of the crash is 25 miles per hour. One neighbor told Nbcnewyork.com that people could drive as fast as 75 miles per hour on that stretch of road.
The driver of the Honda Civic was a 26-year-old man. He had a passenger who is reportedly 30-years of age. The two are in Kings County in critical condition. Nbcnewyork.com reported that the passenger is in the worst shape. Authorities refused to identify either individual by name. There is no information as to whether the driver will face criminal charges. Authorities closed Kings Highway between Synder Avenue and Tilden Avenue for several hours to clear debris. The road is now open.
