Fiery car accident
NANUET, NY – According to Westchester.news12.com, two drivers were involved in a crash that took place in Rockland County at about 9:30 in the morning.
One of the drivers, Terrence Milhouse, says that he was on Route 59 driving to work when his vehicle was T-boned by a silver SUV that went through a red light.
Milhouse and the woman driving the SUV both were able to exit their vehicles. Moments later, the silver SUV caught fire.
Milhouse credits his airbag with allowing him to walk from the scene of the collision.
The burning vehicle caused Route 59 to close as emergency responders worked to put out the flames.
T-bone crashes can be severe and sometimes deadly. When determining who is at fault in one of these collisions, the driver who struck the other vehicle is most often suspected to be responsible for the crash. In many cases, these accidents take place because a driver runs through a red light and hits a vehicle that is traveling perpendicular to them. However, in other crashes, a driver making a left turn will cut off a driver who has a green light and the right-of-way causing the driver to strike the side of their vehicle. Sometimes traffic cameras can be used to show who was at fault in the crash.
When a vehicle is hit on its side, there is little protection for the vehicle occupants. On average, these accidents cause about 10,000 deaths per year in the United States.
Drivers involved in these types of crashes should call 911 and report the crash, and if possible and safe to do so, should take photos as well.
