Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Crash
STATEN ISLAND, New York — A mid-afternoon car accident forced authorities to close several lanes of traffic on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. According to a report on SILIVE.com, police, fire, and EMS officials received a 911 call around 1:55 p.m. reporting the accident. Officers from the New York City Police Department closed all of the upper-level lanes headed into Brooklyn from Staten Island. Emergency responders from the Fire Department of New York and New York EMS transported two people to the hospital with injuries. Both the MTA and public service agency Notify NYC alerted Brooklyn-bound motorists to use the lower level of the bridge if possible and allot more time to travel into Brooklyn.
The earliest details of the crash were still being sorted out by police and fire shortly after they responded to the multi-vehicle pile-up on the upper level of the bridge. The first reports from authorities suggested that at least four cars were involved in the crash.
NYPD officers had not determined how the accident happened or who might be at fault. They did say that one of the cars involved in the crash was severely damaged and would take a substantial amount of time to remove from the span. Another car was facing the wrong way. Crews said that tow trucks would have to spin the vehicle so that it could be towed safely away. Radio transmissions by first responders indicated that clean up would take a very long time.
An FDNY spokesperson told SILIVE.com that at least two people sustained injuries in the crash. Authorities did not discuss the nature of their injuries. The two injured motorists received EMS transport to Staten Island University Hospital located in Ocean Breeze for treatment. There was no updated information about the condition of the two accident victims or whether they were released from the hospital. NYPD has the case under investigation at this time.
