Wrong-way Accident Lawsuits

According to a news report on TruckingInfo.com, wrong-way collisions are far more common than most people admit, with more than 2,000 deaths from head-on collisions on divided highways between 2015 and 2018 alone. Wrong-way collisions, which typically result in head-on collisions, are usually fatal, and the number of deaths has increased by 34% over the past several years.

Many wrong-way drivers are impaired, which has led AAA and the National Transportation Safety Board to recommend that state policymakers consider using alcohol-ignition interlock devices, high-visibility enforcement, and infrastructure countermeasures, such as more-visible traffic signs and signals in the correct locations.

Some states have introduced new technology to tackle the problem of wrong-way drivers. Arizona was among the first states to develop a corridor-level system for detecting wrong-way vehicles, notifying law enforcement, and warning both wrong-way and right-way traffic. The system, which uses thermal cameras and enhanced warning signage, has been successful, detecting more than 300 wrong-way vehicles on I-17 since 2018.

Connecticut is also taking measures to address the issue of wrong-way driving, including using LED-flashing technology to stop wrong-way drivers. In July, the state approved $20 million in funding for wrong-way mitigation measures, with a detection pilot program set to launch at 16 high-risk ramp locations in 2023.

Oklahoma’s $2.3 million pilot program includes radar and thermal sensors that trigger flashing LED warning signs when a driver enters a wrong-way zone. An alert is sent to law enforcement and message signs warning other drivers if the wrong-way driver does not turn around.

Other states, including Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Texas, are also testing similar technology to prevent wrong-way crashes.

Despite the availability of technology to detect and stop wrong-way drivers, fatalities from such crashes continue to occur. By implementing advanced warning systems and detection technologies, states can work to reduce the number of fatal wrong-way crashes and keep their roads safer for everyone.
