LYNBROOK, Long Island, N.Y. — Newsday reported that a police officer with the New York City Police Department died in a motor vehicle accident while off duty in Lynbrook on Long Island. The fatal crash happened on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, around 6:50 a.m. Although the officer was off duty at the time, officials with the New York City Police Department say that the officer was on the way to report for his next shift. Officials have not disclosed the identity of the officer, officer’s age, or where the officer was stationed. The Lynbrook Police department has the accident under investigation.
A lieutenant with the Lynbrook Police Department told Newsday that the officer was headed to work via Pennsylvania Boulevard when around 6:50 a.m. on Wednesday, the officer collided with another vehicle. The Lynbrook Police determined the accident scene to be near the Hempstead Avenue intersection with Pennsylvania Boulevard. A photograph of the scene shows the officer’s car off of the road on a grassy area with the tires on the driver’s side missing, the front end crumbled, and the driver’s steering wheel airbag deflated after being deployed.
Emergency medical personnel transported the officer to Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Physicians at that facility declared the officer deceased.
The driver of the other motor vehicle involved in the crash did not sustain any severe injuries in the accident. Lynbrook police did not identify that individual. The case remains under investigation with the Lynbrook Police Department and they have no issued any criminal charges at this time.
This officer is the second off duty New York City police officer who died in a traffic accident in a month. On April 11, a New York City Police officer died after he lost control over his motorcycle while riding in Queens on the Laurelton Parkway. The officer died at 42-years-of-age and left behind a wife and five children.
