STATEN ISLAND, NY- Silive.com writes that a crash involving multiple vehicles took place on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge leading to one person suffering injuries. Emergency vehicles responded to the scene.
The collision occurred in the Brooklyn-bound lanes around 12:46 in the afternoon according to a spokesperson for the FDNY.
The patient was taken to the Lutheran Hospital for treatment of injuries. Reports do not indicate the nature or the severity of the person’s injuries.
The crash caused heavy traffic that lasted for about an hour.
Crashes are frequently reported on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Many of these crashes are likely related to the heavy traffic during rush hour. When more vehicles are on a roadway, the likelihood of a collision increases.
In winter, weather can sometimes increase the likelihood of collisions by causing slick or icy roads. This issue can be worse on bridges. Ice can form on a bridge even when the roads are thawed. The exposed nature of bridges leads to ice forming faster and remaining longer than on roads where the ground might not be as cold. This can catch drivers off guard as they are diving on a road that is not icy and it suddenly becomes slick as they enter the bridge.
It is important, regardless of the weather to remain alert while driving. In areas with heavy traffic, there is a good chance that a driver will need to slow their vehicle or come to a stop because vehicles are backed up. In cases involving bad weather, vehicles may need to come to a stop sooner to avoid sliding into other vehicles that have slowed to accommodate that road conditions.
