FLAGLER COUNTY, FL – According to News4jax.com, five teenagers suffered injuries in a single-vehicle crash in Flagler County, Florida on Monday, February 18, 2019. The teens were in a pickup truck that collided with a concrete utility pole that was located near the intersection of Airport Road and Hunters Ridge Boulevard.
The driver was a 16-year-old boy. One passenger in the truck was in the truck bed. When the vehicle hit the pole, the person in the back of the vehicle was ejected. The driver and the boy who was thrown from the vehicle both suffered severe injuries in the crash and were taken to the AdventHealth Hospital where they were treated for serious injuries. Another teen also suffered serious injuries, and two others sustained minor injuries and brought to the Daytona Hospital.
The five people in the pickup truck ranged in age from 15 to 18.
Police are have not yet determined whether alcohol and drugs were involved in the collision. Charges are reportedly pending.
Single-vehicle collisions are often the result of speeding. Alcohol and drugs, distracted driving, and drowsy driving all are common contributing factors in these crashes as well. Drivers who travel at the speed limit and stay sober and alert are unlikely to be in one of these accidents.
Single vehicle run-off-the-road crashes are some of the deadliest accidents that take place on the road. Many of these accidents result in a vehicle striking a fixed object located on the side of the roadway. The most likely object to be hit is a tree. After trees, utility poles are the next most frequently struck roadside object.
