STATEN ISLAND, New York — A multi-car pileup on the upper level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge heading into Brooklyn is to blame for six injuries. The crash on the bridge happened around 2:45 p.m. Sunday. The crash, which occurred in the center of the bridge, forced first responders to close all of the lanes of traffic heading into Brooklyn for a few hours until all of the motorists who were injured could be evacuated and the wrecked cars cleared from the scene. Police also stopped traffic in the HOV lane heading into Staten Island, according to SILIVE.com. State Police diverted all vehicular traffic traveling toward Brooklyn from Staten Island around the bridge until traffic tie-ups could be alleviated.
About 2:45 p.m. Sunday, crews from the FDNY, along with other first responders, received a call for help regarding a large traffic accident in the middle of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge on the Brooklyn-bound side. Upon arrival, rescuers found six people injured. EMS transported five of the injured to area hospitals for treatment. One of the people hurt in the accident declined transport from the scene to a medical facility. There was no information on whether that person sought treatment at a later time.
Traffic remained at a standstill over an hour later. State Police initially closed only two lanes from Staten Island into Brooklyn. However, the large debris field created by the crash forced the closure of all lanes heading into Brooklyn and one lane heading toward Staten Island. SILIVE.com reported that two vehicles involved in the accident sustained massive front-end damage, suggesting that the multi-vehicle pileup involved some rear-end type collisions.
There was no information available from the NYPD whether they or the State Police issued any tickets or made any arrests as a result of the pileup. Several hours passed before traffic finally dissipated, and State Police removed their detour.
