CENTRAL ISLIP, NEW YORK – As reported online by pix11.com, a retired New York City police officer is facing criminal charges following a Long Island drunk driving accident that resulted in one of his passenger’s death.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the 48-year-old retired NYPD officer was involved in a drunk driving accident this past January 2019. The retired officer had allegedly been driving home from a nightclub on Long Island with two passengers when the vehicle he was driving mounted a curb, hit several trees and overturned on the front yard of a residence. A 32-year-old backseat passenger was killed in the accident. Details on whether the second passenger sustained any injuries are unavailable.
The retired NYPD police officer has been charged with multiple crimes, including, among others, aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated. Bail for the officer was set at $125,000 cash and bond was set at $250,000. The officer is due back in court on June 12, 2019.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10,874 victims died from drunk driving accidents across the United States in 2017, which equates to nearly thirty (30) deaths each day, or one death every forty-eight (48) minutes. Such statistics are devastating, especially because most drivers and passengers are aware of the tragic risks of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Of the more than 10,000 drunk driving accident victims in 2017, 220 of these victims were children. Additionally, approximately thirty (30) percent of all fatal motor vehicle accidents in New York in 2017 involved alcohol.
