Roll over crash on Verrazzano bridge
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Traffic on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was stuck bumper-to-bumper after multi-car crash which also involved a vehicle that rolled over. Ten people were injured in the accident that happened around 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019, according to NBC 4 New York. Of the ten people who were hurt, two of the victims sustained serious injuries. First responders described the injuries as non-life threatening. Police continue to examine the evidence obtained from the crime scene to determine why the vehicle rolled over, if possible. The investigating officers did not issue any criminal charges or traffic citations at the outset of their inquiry.
First responders from NYPD as well as FDNY raced to the scene of the accident on the Brooklyn-bound side of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. According to a report appearing on silive.com, the call reporting the accident came into the emergency call center around 7:16 p.m. Although it is not apparent at this time what happened, the report suggests that one vehicle flipped over and initiated the multi-car crash. A spokesperson for the FDNY told silive.com that first responders treated eight people at the scene of the crash for minor injuries. Meanwhile, two people removed from the overturned vehicle required transportation to a local hospital for further examination and treatment. Both of the injured parties are expected to make a full recovery.
Police have yet to determine how the accident happened. Officers did not reach a conclusion as to how the vehicle flipped over. What is not clear from the description of the accident at this time is how many vehicles were involved, whether all of the injured came from the same car, or if the two most seriously injured people were riding in the vehicle that overturned.
The traffic headed east on Saturday evening was at a standstill due to the accident investigation. Responding officers from NYPD closed two lanes of traffic going into Brooklyn to perform an investigation and clear the damaged vehicles from the scene.
