Pileup on BQE
BROOKLYN, NY- Nydailynews.com writes that a multiple-vehicle pileup took place in Brooklyn. The crash involved a box truck and two passenger vehicles. The incident took place on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway close to Atlantic Avenue just before nine in the morning.
Images from the crash scene show one of the vehicles badly mangled and the box truck partially on top of the back of another vehicle. Two of the victims sustained serious injuries in the wreck, and four others were also hospitalized.
Multiple vehicle accidents often happen on busy roads with high-speed limits. Vehicles on expressways often travel too close to the car in front of them without realizing how long it will take them to stop in an emergency. If something goes wrong, a whole chain of vehicles may end up involved in the crash.
These accidents can also be caused by slick, wet roads, and bad weather that leaves drivers with poor visibility. In situations where fog, heavy rainfall, or snow prevents people from seeing the road ahead, chain-reaction crashes become a bigger risk.
One of the problems individuals involved in these types of accidents face is determining who is at fault. In many cases, the fault will be divided among more than one of the drivers. Another issue is that vehicles are made to withstand one collision, but not to take two or more hits in rapid succession. When a vehicle is struck the first time, the airbags may deploy, and the front or back may crumple in the way it is intended to, but those protections will not be there for the occupants on subsequent strikes.
