Horrific Crash On LIE. An investigation is underway to determine if excessive speed was a factor behind a horrific early morning crash on August 31 on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) in Queens. The collision left three young people dead.
Giovanny Sanchez and Christina Formato, both 24, were riding in the back seat of a 2010 Infiniti when it hit a divider and split in half. The driver, Michael Fabre, age 25, had been traveling eastbound at “an apparent high rate of speed” when he “lost control of the vehicle”, as he tried to exit at Maurice Avenue in Maspeth, police said.
Sanchez, Formato, and Fabre were all pronounced dead at the scene, while two other unidentified passengers in the car, were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, according to Newsday.
A 2012 Acura TL traveling in the same direction struck the front half of the Infiniti in the left lane. The 28-year-old driver of the Acura suffered only minor injuries and refused any medical attention at the scene. Seconds after the initial crash, a dump truck approached the collision scene at high speed. The driver of the truck slammed on his brakes, but could not stop in time and collided into 5 other vehicles that had stopped behind the first crash, police said.
No one was badly hurt in the subsequent impact. All survivors from the collisions, including one woman who went into cardiac arrest, were taken to Elmhurst and Queens General hospitals, the New York Post reports.
Fabre, an Army National Guard sergeant from Oakland Gardens, Queens, aspired to be a city corrections officer, and was “inseparable” from his friend Sanchez, relatives said. Fabre had just asked his girlfriend’s father permission to marry Bianca Sagliocca, 22, two weeks earlier. Fabre and his friends were driving home from a night out in Manhattan when tragedy struck.
