EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn, N.Y. — The 19-year-old driver of a Mercedes-Benz sedan died, and his two teenage passengers, one 19-year-old who suffered minor injuries, and the other 16-years-old suffered massive injuries after the vehicle raced down Kings Highway and slammed into a tree. According to NBC New York, witnesses said that the Mercedes and two other cars, one a BMW, were racing north on Kings Highway when the driver of the silver Mercedes-Benz lost control. The car split in half upon hitting a tree and the engine burst into flames. Emergency calls came into New York emergency lines around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2019. New York Police Department’s Accident Squad are working the scene and trying to reconstruct what led to this tragic scene.
Witnesses told reporters from NBC New York that they knew what caused the accident. Those witnesses said that speed, and racing, in particular, was to blame for the devastating crash. The witnesses indicated that the silver Mercedes-Benz was the third car along with a BMW that raced north on Kings Highway. The silver Mercedes went over the sidewalk lined with trees that separates the main road from the service road where residents of the neighborhood park their cars. The Mercedes plowed into the trunk of a thick tree. The collision was so powerful, the car split in two, with the majority of the front of the car going to the right while the engine and part of the driver’s side went back into the main road to the left of the wreckage.
There is no update on the medical condition of the two teens who went to the hospital. The initial reports indicated that the 16-year-old was in critical condition after sustaining blunt trauma across his body. The 19-year-old who was in the back seat reportedly suffered injuries described as minor.
Police have not concluded their investigation, and there was no information about possible criminal charges.
