SUV rollover accident
NEW YORK – According to Witn.com, an SUV rolled over causing a three-vehicle collision on Charles Boulevard. The crash injured three people, all of whom were transported to a nearby hospital. No one in the news van sustained injuries.
The collision led to the southbound lanes being shut down while the scene was cleared and investigated. Reports indicate that one of the SUVs was leaving a Walgreens parking lot when the driver attempted to cross over all five lanes. A second SUV struck the first one causing the first SUV to overturn.
Two people in the first SUV suffered injuries as did one individual in the second SUV.
SUVs have a greater likelihood of rolling over than cars because SUVs are higher from the ground than the smaller vehicles which make SUVs more top heavy. These crashes are often severe and even deadly. While only a small percent of collisions cause vehicles to flip to their sides or rollover, close to one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities occur in crashes in which a vehicle rolls over.
Rollover crashes are one of the main risks of SUVs. Over time, the design of these vehicles has been improving meaning that they pose a lower risk of overturning than earlier models of SUVs, but still a higher risk than that posed by cars. SUVs still offer some safety advantages over cars. Because of their larger size, SUVs are better at protecting vehicle occupants in multiple-vehicle crashes than are smaller cars.
Despite elevated risks of rollovers, SUVs are becoming more popular than cars in the United States. Many car manufacturers are even discontinuing many of their sedans as SUVs are now selling far better across the United States than cars.
