Traffic accident in Cedarhurst LI

CEDARHURST, Long Island, N.Y. —According to Long Island News 12, a crash involving four cars sent three people to the hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Police are still investigating why the four cars collided at the intersection of Peninsula Boulevard and Cedarhurst Avenue around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2019. First responders shut down the road for a period to allow crews to transport the wounded to local hospitals and to clear the area of debris.

News footage shown by Long Island News 12 on their website showed first responders gathered around four motor vehicles at the site of the collision all with heavy front-end damage. News reports did not say how many people were in each car and in what cars the injured parties rode at the time of the crash. The extent of the injuries sustained by the motorists who went to the hospital was undisclosed by local authorities. There was no word on whether criminal charges would issue against any of the operators of the autos involved in the crash.

When an accident occurs, the first instinct that overcomes people involved is to try to explain what happened and why. The natural reaction to the adrenaline rush is to start apologizing for one’s actions. In reality, the apology is for what happened and not necessarily about one’s actions. However, the intention behind the statement could be easily misconstrued and when the police arrive to investigate the incident, a witness could correctly say you apologized for the crash and the officer could conclude that you were at fault, even if you were not. The officer will memorialize your comment in the formal accident report and then you have to live with the consequences of what you said, even if you did not mean it.

The best course of action is to say very little, if anything, on scene to another person other than the responding police officer. The responding police officer will be less likely to misquote you and will not understand your comments as acceptance of responsibility for causing the crash.
