STATEN ISLAND, NY – June 18, 2020 – According to an online news story published on New York Daily News, a 21-year-old man driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee steered into the wrong lane at the Corneila Avenue and Hylan Boulevard intersection causing a serious accident. The 21-year-old driver crashed into a Nissan Rogue. A pregnant woman and her husband were inside the Nissan Rogue during the collision. The 21-year-old driver who allegedly caused the car accident was arrested and charged with several crimes such as aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle, reckless endangerment, and assault.
The two accident victims were transported to Staten Island University North. The 28-year-old pregnant woman was rushed into surgery and an emergency C-section was performed. The woman was six-months pregnant. Tragically, surgeons were unable to save her baby girl. According to the news report, hospital records claimed the baby took a few breaths before she passed away. In New York, if the baby took her first breaths at the hospital and then passed away, the suspect could be charged with homicide.
The 21-year-old suspect has allegedly had his driver´s license revoked or suspended at least four other times before this tragic accident. The suspect admitted to police that he understood that he was speeding, and he knew that he was breaking the law by driving without a license. The suspect bailed out of jail and awaits his next criminal hearing.
The mother is recovering and is receiving treatment at the hospital.
