LAKELAND, Fla. — A two-car crash killed a teenager from Lakeland and sent two others to the hospital with severe injuries. The collision occurred around 12:24 a.m., according to a report appearing in The Ledger. The Ledger reported that the Lakeland Police Department responded to the area of Holly Road and East Memorial Boulevard. The responding officers from Lakeland Police said that the crash was head-on between two vehicles. The investigators are trying to determine why one of the cars driven by a 17-year-old male crossed into the opposing travel lane and caused the crash. The 16-year-old passenger in the car which entered the opposite lane died.
The 16-year-old passenger of a 2002 Honda Accord that was heading east on U.S. 92, which is known as East Memorial Boulevard by locals, died at the scene of the crash. Traffic Homicide Investigators from the Lakeland Police Department have determined at this point that the driver of a Honda, a 17-year-old teen, veered into the westbound lane and slammed head-on into a 2017 Jeep Compass driven by a 42-year-old male. The Jeep Compass was in the outside lane of the westbound side of U.S. 92 when the vehicles collided. The Jeep, unable to stop, slammed into the front passenger’s compartment of the Accord.
The driver of the Honda was severely hurt, as was the driver of the Jeep. Medical personnel from Polk County Fire and Rescue, along with the Lakeland Fire Department treated the two drivers at the scene. EMS then transported them to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Authorities had to close East Memorial Boulevard for about five and a half hours while they investigated the crash. Traffic Homicide Investigators have asked that anyone who might have witnessed the crash to come forward with any information concerning the fatal crash. There was no information on whether the 17-year-old operator of the Honda would face charges.
