PEARL RIVER, NY- Abc7ny.com writes that a Porsche drove off of an overpass and onto train tracks below where it caught fire. The crash took place over the weekend in Rockland County at West Crooked Hill Road. The vehicle was a 2017 Porsche Macan, and two teens in the vehicle died while a third was severely injured.
Reports indicate that the driver, a 17-year-old girl, struck a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta and then went over the side of the overpass. A 17-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl were both passengers in the vehicle and were both declared dead at a local hospital. The driver survived the crash with serious injuries and was taken to the Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
Witnesses described the terrifying scene and the sound of the crash and stated that the people who were present when the crash took place were not able to pull the victims out of the burning vehicle.
A vigil was held at the students’ high school, and grief counselors are going to be available at the school to help fellow students cope with the loss.
Driving is one of the most dangerous things a teenager can do. Statistically, car crashes are one of the leading causes of accidental death for this age group. Some risk factors include distracted driving, such as smartphone use and driving in a vehicle with other teens. In many cases, teenagers are prone to distractions when they are together. Teens also lack the experience that comes with driving for many years. The lack of experience can mean that these drivers are less likely to realize when they are in a hazardous situation or to react appropriately in the event of an emergency.
