Accident hospitalizes two
POMFRET, NY – According to norwichbulletin.com, a two-vehicle collision in Pomfret sent two people to the hospital on Monday, January 7, 2019. The crash occurred at about 7:45 in the morning.
According to reports, 39-year-old Mathew Colin Michaud of Dayville was operating a 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and traveling west on Route 101 when 31-year-old Kayleigh Galipeau of Brooklyn drover her 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt through a red light on Route 169 where it intersects with Route 101.
Michaud’s Jeep hit the Chevy. Both of the drivers were using their seatbelts at the time of the collision. Michaud and Galipeau were transported to a nearby hospital. The vehicles were towed away from the scene because they had sustained extensive damage in the accident.
Accidents caused by drivers running through red lights can be extremely serious. These crashes can result in T-bone incidents in which a vehicle strikes another vehicle on its side. In these events, the vehicle that is struck on its side will not offer much protection to the vehicle occupants. There is simply not much space between the point of impact and the person inside the vehicle.
Despite the known risks of running a red light, drivers do this far more often than most people realize. One study indicated that on average, a person would run through a red light at any given intersection one time every twenty minutes meaning this takes place at intersections three times an hour.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to alter driver behavior, but it is possible to design better intersections and have traffic laws that make the roads safer. Lower speed limits often mean less serious accidents and fewer crashes. Intersections that are roundabouts rather than cross sections have proven safer as well. By improving the engineering of intersections, the roads can influence drivers’ behaviors without the drivers making any conscious decision to drive more responsibly.
