RIVERHEAD, New York — A Long Island police officer miraculously survived a tremendous car crash and is now out of danger. The officer is heading to a rehabilitation facility for further treatment as he fights his way back to return to work. The Patch from Riverhead, New York, reported that the injured officer joined a vehicle pursuit that started in a nearby community. The officer tried to pass a car and collided with another vehicle that turned left in front of him. The officer barely escaped with his life. Now he is faced with a long and hard road to recover from the injuries he suffered in the crash.
A man who allegedly stole a car started a multi-jurisdictional chase that wound up with a young police officer fighting for his life. The police officer, who also doubled as a town firefighter, joined the pursuit on Youngs Avenue in Riverhead. The officer engaged the lights and siren on his patrol car. He tried to pass a car, also heading north on Youngs Avenue, but the person in front of him turned left, causing the collision. The officer’s patrol car left the roadway and hit a fence on an adjacent street.
The crash inflicted severe injuries upon the officer. Volunteer Ambulance Corps members from Riverhead transported him to a nearby hospital. Doctors there stabilized him and then called for a medevac to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment due to the severity of the trauma he sustained.
Other officers continued the pursuit until the fleeing felon ditched the stolen car and ran away. Police captured him two days later.
The gravely injured officer was praised by his colleagues and his community for being an upstanding police officer and citizen. No timetable was provided for him to resume his duties. Well-wishers established a charity page soliciting donations to a fund established for the officer while he is out of work recovering.
