SARASOTA, Fla. — A cement mixer riding north on I-75 near Exit 210, Fruitville Road, experienced a blown tire that sent the mixer through the median and into the southbound lane causing a collision with three other vehicles.Mysuncoast.com reported that the left front tire of the cement mixer blew out around 11:30 a.m. The cement mixer, operated by a 60-year-old man from Bradenton, Fla. was in the right lane when the mixer’s left front tire blew out. The driver of the cement mixer and another motorist sustained severe injuries in the accident. Authorities closed I-75 south for several hours and had only one lane northbound open to traffic for about 90 minutes after the crash. Florida Highway Patrol accident reconstruction troopers are still investigating the incident.
Dangerous situations arise when tires on large trucks blow out. The driver of the cement mixer heading north on I-75 in Sarasota lost control over his vehicle when the left front tire blew out. The sudden tire deflation threw the cement mixer violently across the center and left lanes of I-75 north. Then the mixer busted through the steel retaining cables lining the center median. The steel cables could not prevent the mixer from entering the southbound lane. Once in the southbound lane, the mixer struck a 2004 Pontiac Vibe operated by a 37-year-old man from North Port. The mixer flipped over after slamming into the Pontiac.
The collisions were not done. A 2019 Toyota 4-Runner crashed into the overturned cement mixer. Also, a 2020 Toyota Camry swerved off of the road to avoid hitting the overturned truck and hit the steel cables instead.
The cement truck driver and the driver of the Pontiac Vibe sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash. Both received emergency transport under a “trauma alert” to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. The other two motorists involved escaped injury.
