Child Daycare Abuse and Neglect

Common Children’s Injuries. Most people would prefer to care for their young children themselves and not have to work at a job during that time. Unfortunately, many parents do not have that option, and must entrust daycare providers with their children’s health and well-being. While most daycare facilities and staff provide excellent care for children, that is sadly, not always the case.

It is important to know which injuries are most common at daycare facilities in an effort to weed out any possible abuse that may be happening. Most daycare facilities either have playgrounds or take children to visit playgrounds as part of their normal daily activities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every year, over 200,000 children below the age of 14 are injured on playgrounds.

A study in 2001 revealed that nearly half of these playground injuries are serious and include bone fractures, dislocations, concussions, and internal injuries. Many of these may be preventable with careful supervision.

The personal injury attorneys at Parker Waichman LLP have years of experience representing clients in abuse and neglect lawsuits. The firm offers free, no-obligation case evaluations to any individuals seeking legal information.

Daycare injuries may occur from neglect, particularly if a facility is understaffed or children are not diligently supervised.

A child may ignore all warnings and simple daycare furnishings can be a risk for a child’s curiosity. Climbing on unsecured furniture, or falling objects from tall bookshelves or desks, may cause bruises, head injuries, even broken bones.

In addition, children may also suffer burns associated with bottle warming. Culture of Safety remarks that children have been burned when a slow cooker is used to heat multiple bottles. The child may pull on the cord, causing scalding hot water to splash on their sensitive skin.

How to Choose a Daycare Facility

Before selecting a daycare for your child, it is important to visit the facility to see the environment and meet the staff. Visiting during busy hours may give you a sense of how the facility operates.

It is a good opportunity to check whether the proper safety precautions are in place. For instance, are chemicals and other hazardous objects out of children’s reach? Are bookcases secured to the wall? Is there sufficient staff to properly supervise the number of children?

Be sure to check the daycare’s credentials and make sure the facility is properly licensed and accredited by local, state, and national authorities.

Daycare Abuse Lawsuits

Child Daycare Abuse and Neglect playgroundThere have been allegations of child abuse recently, against a daycare in Riverdale, Utah. One mother, in the hopes that her story would motivate other parents to speak out, voiced concerns against Bravo Academy daycare. Police reported that her 5-year-old son was choked, according to the Standard-Examiner.

The boy was allegedly choked and then slammed to the ground by a 20-year-old daycare employee, according to police reports. The daycare worker is facing a misdemeanor child abuse charge. He pleaded not guilty. The owner of the daycare denied that any abuse occurred and that the boy has a history of behavioral issues.

The Utah Bureau of Child Development, since 2012, has handled over 2,000 reports of caregiver-related incidents that required investigation. In 2016, the largest number of cases was reported with 486 incidents.

A 67-year-old worker in Cape Coral, Florida, was recently fired for alleged child abuse and cruelty. The worker allegedly grabbed a young girl by the hair and a young boy by the throat while they were playing outside, Fox 4 reports.

A different staff member, who had only been working at the daycare for two days, witnessed the incident and confronted the other worker about it. The employee allegedly answered, “It’s so hard to work with kids.”

The daycare’s director learned of the alleged incident in January, and has since, fired the employee. The woman has been arrested and both families want to press charges.

It is important to pay attention to your child’s appearance and demeanor before and after daycare. Surefire signs of abuse can include visible injuries, such as bruises, black eyes or cuts. But child abuse can take a variety of forms, including neglect or emotional abuse that can be more difficult to spot. So, it is vital to recognize the possible signs of abuse and know how to talk to your children about their experiences.
