According to a new report published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, micro-mobility products such as e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric-powered hoverboards are leading to a spike in injuries and deaths. One reason for the sharp increase in injuries and deaths caused by electric-powered micro-mobility products is the intense popularity of these products.
According to 2017-2021 data published by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, approximately 270,000 people received medical treatment at U.S. emergency rooms for injuries connected to these transportation products. The CPSC reports that the annual number of injuries caused by electric-powered micro-mobility products has doubled in just five years. Last year, there were 77,200 emergency room visits compared to 34,000 back in 2017.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission report, the number of annual fatalities also rose to 48 in 2021. That is almost ten times as many deaths as there were back in 2017. The CPSC researchers discovered about 130 deaths occurred during the five-year study period.
The CPSC has issued the following tips to reduce injuries and deaths while using electric-powered micro-mobility vehicles:
In addition to injuries caused by crashes, the CPSC warns of injuries caused by fires.
