RONKONKOMA, Long Island, N.Y. — According to Abc7ny.com, a rollover crash happened in Ronkonkoma on the Long Island Expressway about 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2018. Three teenagers escaped with their lives after being ejected from the back seat of the car in which they were riding when the car rolled over due to a tire blow-out
Suffolk County police officers responded to the accident scene and learned that a 21-year-old man operating a 2015 Honda Civic with four passengers- one in the front and three in the back- experienced a tire blow out somewhere between Exits 61 and 62 on the LIE. The ruptured tire caused the driver to lose control over the car and hit a guardrail. The Honda flipped over after striking the guardrail.
The forces of the crash caused the three rear seat passengers to be ejected from the car. Two of the backseat passengers landed in the roadway, and the third landed on the side of the road. Police listed all of them as teenagers but did not give their precise ages.
All five of the vehicle’s occupants were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for emergency treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police did say that the two front seat passengers wore seatbelts.
The Suffolk Police will continue to look into the cause of the crash. They did not indicate if the driver would face any charges relating to this incident.
Experts say that when a blow-out happens, the urge is to pull off of the road immediately. While instinctual, this is not the appropriate way to handle the problem. Experts advise pressing the gas pedal slightly to stabilize the car and then continue in your lane before gradually easing off of the road. The driver must avoid slamming on the brakes or swerving, which will force the driver into a tailspin.
