New York, NY- According to brooklynpaper.com, a woman was struck by a car while cycling in Brooklyn, New York. The cyclist claims that she was forced to swerve out of the bike lane because of a police vehicle that was parked in the bike lane. The injured woman says that she blames to police for the incident, and not the driver who struck her.
Police arrested the driver, Fnu Naeem-Ullah, for leaving the scene of an accident. A representative from the police department said that police caught up with Naeem-Ullah as he tried to flee the scene.
Police are denying the cyclist’s accusations that they were responsible for the Brooklyn accident and stated that the vehicle was not parked at the location of the accident. The police did not deny that their vehicle had been in a bike lane though. The department says that the van was “three car lengths” ahead of the place where the crash occurred.
The cyclist was struck at around 11:45 in the morning. The driver said that he had not done anything wrong and that the cyclist drove into traffic and struck his vehicle. Within an hour of the accident, the police had reportedly moved their vehicle over to allow space in the bike lane.
The bike lane was installed in 2016, but there have been many complaints by cyclists who claim that vehicles will park in the lanes. At one point last year, the planters that were installed to protect cyclists from traffic were moved into the lanes where they blocked cyclists.
