NEW YORK – A news article posted on police1.com reports that an unlicensed driver struck and ran over a law enforcement officer’s leg. The incident occurred as the officer attempted to arrest a suspect on a Bronx street. The video released shows the collision and the officer screaming in pain as the 24-year-old suspect attempts to flee in a black SUV.
Other police officers at the scene prevented the suspect from fleeing the scene. He has been criminally charged with resisting arrest, felony assault, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, driving without a license, and obstructing governmental administration, police reported. The suspect is being held without bail.
The collision occurred at around 6 PM when law enforcement officers witnessed an SUV driver driving with expired, temporary New Jersey license plates. The driver refused orders to stop, sped off, and swerved in and out of traffic to evade police. At W. 190th Street and Davidson Avenue, the suspect drove up onto the sidewalk and then sped into the street toward the officers.
Two law enforcement officers stepped out of their patrol vehicles and walked to the SUV that was in the middle of an intersection. A male police officer walked to the passenger side of the SUV while the female officer approached the driver’s side. As the female police officer opened the suspect’s door and attempted to obtain the keys, the suspect punched the gas. The suspect dragged the police officer for around 30 feet before she fell. The suspect then drove over her right leg and crashed into a parked vehicle.
The law enforcement officer was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital for emergency treatment of her injuries. The other officer’s knees were injured in the incident, and he was taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
