The Dangers of Elevator Work on Construction Sites

Construction site elevator accidents

Construction site elevator

Across the United States, workers on construction and building sites may be injured by working on hoists, elevators, interior-hung scaffolds, and elevator false cars. Specifically, falls into unmarked or open elevator shafts on construction sites occur in about half of all elevator-related injuries.  Injuries from falls may be catastrophic, and include, as discussed more fully below, nerve damage, bone fractures, traumatic brain injuries, and spinal cord injuries.

Additional types of injuries and fatalities that occur in elevator accidents on construction sites are caused by the following accidents:

  • Becoming struck by the elevator’s moving parts or its doors;
  • Uncontrolled falls of the elevator car;
  • Electrocution or electric shock;
  • Being hit by the elevator or counterweight; and
  • Asphyxiation due to being stuck in the elevator.

Any of the above accidents has the potential to cause the following serious types of injuries:

  • Nerve damage
  • Spinal cord injuries leading to paralysis (whether paraplegia or quadriplegia)
  • Decapitation
  • Bone fractures
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Traumatic amputations
  • Emotional trauma and psychological conditions
  • Trauma to the head

It is important to keep in mind that the emotional trauma related to an accident involving an elevator can affect victims for the remainder of their lives.  Having a fear of elevators can be devastating, as it can prevent a person from travelling with family or friends, going to work, leaving your home (if you reside in an apartment complex), and may also cause people to have a fear of small spaces, heights, or both.  Those who suffer serious injuries in elevator accidents may lose the ability to do routine tasks including eating, shopping, working, and taking a shower or bath.
