FLORIDA – According to Ocala.com, a man from Georgia received a citation for failing to maintain his lane and causing a fatal crash. The driver, 48-year-old Grady Lee Nelson drove his 2011 BMW out of the center lane of Interstate 75 and into the right lane where he struck a 2005 Toyota Corolla.
When the BMW hit the Corolla, the Corolla traveled off the roadway and into the grass on the roadside where it flipped and crashed into trees.
The victim, 44-year-old Twila Leshawn Robinson was killed in the collision. Robinson was partially ejected in the crash. The victim was not using her seatbelt at the time of the incident and was thrown partially out of her Corolla’s sunroof. Robinson worked for the UF Health Shands, located in Gainesville.
Nelson continued a little way down the road and then backed his vehicle up. He told officers that he heard a noise while he was driving and that he had not seen the Toyota, and did not know where it came from, but he was aware that the vehicles had collided. Nelson said that his dog was traveling in his vehicle and that the animal jumped on his lap which caused him to hit the accelerator.
The police investigated the damaged vehicles and the crash scene to determine what had occurred. Based on the physical evidence, the police determined that the BMW had struck the Toyota from the rear to the front. The front of the Toyota showed that the impact had crushed the wheel well in a forward direction.
The report indicates that neither of the drivers was impaired at the time of the accident.
