According to an online news article published on gmauthority.com, on October 21, 2021, General Motors issued a product safety recall for some 2020 and 2021 GMC Sierra HD and Chevy Silverado HD pickup trucks. The recall is related to the wrong factory spare tire being attached to the vehicles during the manufacturing process.
The recall states that the affected pickup trucks could be ordered with either the 18-inch accessory road tire (RPO Q2V) or the 20-inch accessory wheel and tire combo (RPO code REM). However, the recalled pickup trucks were errantly equipped with a 17-inch spare tire (RPO ZXT or RPO ZHQ).
The danger lies with the 17-inch spare tire being installed on one of the rear axles. When one of the rear tires is smaller than the other rear tires, the differences in revolutions per mile could prevent the “anti-lock braking system (ABS) from controlling the rear wheels independently on low-friction surfaces,” resulting in an accident. When the anti-lock braking system (ABS) cannot operate as designed, there is an increased risk of an accident.
GMC and Chevrolet dealers will provide affected customers with the appropriate sized spare tire. GM and Chevy dealers will also attach a new spare tire/wheel placard label on top of the existing label. Moreover, affected owners will be given an Owner’s Manual insert explaining the spare wheel/tire usage with the 18-inch or 20-inch accessory road tires.
The recalled pickup trucks include:
The number of pickup trucks recalled is currently not clear. Owners of the affected pickup trucks will receive a recall letter from General Motors. The GM recalled number is N212329780.
