SURFSIDE, FLORIDA – A news report posted on nytimes.com states that the last victim in the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium tower in Surfside, Florida, has been identified. The final, tragic death toll reached 98 souls. Fortunately, all victims have been recovered due to the painstaking effort by emergency crews to find every resident lost in the catastrophe.
The victim, a woman who lived on the sixth floor at the Champlain Towers South, was identified, and law enforcement contacted the family. Officials also verified they the remains of all of the victims were recovered.
The building collapse is the deadliest structural failure in U.S. history. The response to the condo collapse was also the largest non-hurricane emergency ever in Florida.
Hardworking teams of law enforcement officers did not give up their relentless search of millions of pounds of off-site debris for victims’ remains, evidence, and recovering items on behalf of the residents. The final victim’s remains were discovered bank on July 20, and the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner identified the victim this week.
City officials are turning their entire focus on ascertaining what caused the building’s collapse. The Miami-Dade Police Department, along with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, are searching for evidence and clues. Surfside Mayor Charles W. Burkett stated that they would “find out what happened — not tomorrow, not today, but not in the indefinite future.”
