QUEENS, NEW YORK – As reported in an online news article published by pix11.com, a motorcyclist was killed in a drunk driving accident on the Long Island Expressway.
According to police, a 63-year-old man was killed in a drunk driving accident when his motorcycle was struck by a 27-year-old man driving a Nissan. The accident happened in the late evening when both the drunk driver and motorcyclist were traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway near 169thStreet in Queens.
The 27-year-old man allegedly moved from the left lane on the Long Island Expressway into the center lane where he struck the 63-year-old motorcyclist. The impact of the collision caused the motorcyclist to slide along the expressway and strike a guard rail, where he was ejected from the motorcycle. The 27-year-old man’s Nissan continued westbound where he struck a fence separating the Long Island Expressway from the service road.
Once emergency personnel arrived at the scene of the accident, the 63-year-old motorcyclist was pronounced dead. The 27-year-old drunk driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested for driving on a suspended license. The man also faces additional criminal charges, including (1) driving while intoxicated, (2) operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, (3) aggravated unlicensed operator, (4) driving while ability impaired by alcohol, and (5) refusal to take a breath test. Given the drunk driving accident resulted in the death of another person, the 27-year-old man could be facing additional criminal charges as the investigation into the accident continues.
Most drivers know that drunk driving is extremely risky and frequently results in accidents that cause serious injuries or death. However, many drivers continue to get behind the wheel despite the risks. Any drunk driving accident, regardless of the type of vehicle involved, can be catastrophic. However, when a smaller vehicle, such as a motorcycle is involved, or a pedestrian or bicyclist, the chances of the accident resulting in death goes up. Without the protection of a passenger vehicle or truck, it is difficult for accident victims to survive a significant collision.
Drunk driving accident victims who survive their injuries are likely to have a long road to recovery and may never fully heal. Many accident injuries are permanent, changing a person’s life indefinitely.
