Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Rocky Point
ROCKY POINT, NY – A news story posted on dailyvoice.com reports that a motorcyclist and the driver of a Mercedes-Benz collided at around 8:50 pm in Rocky Point. According to the Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives, the motor vehicle collision was fatal.
The Mercedes-Benz’s driver, a 25-year-old man from Rocky Point, was heading southbound along Rocky Point Yaphank Road, just one mile south of Route 25A, when the car collided with a northbound motorcycle being driven by a 26-year-old man from Ridge, Suffolk County, New York.
The motorcyclist was tragically pronounced dead at the accident scene, according to a physician assistant working for the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner. The driver in the Mercedes-Benz was not hurt in the accident.
The motor vehicles were impounded by law enforcement for safety checks. The accident is currently under investigation by law enforcement.
Motorcycle accidents can cause severe injuries such as fractures, head injuries, internal bleeding, concussions, brain injuries, even death. Approximately 30% of all motorcycle accidents are caused by other motorists. One of the most common and most dangerous types of motorcycle accidents involves other motorists pulling out in front of a motorcycle rider. Motorcycle operators and passengers are extremely vulnerable when involved in a motor vehicle accident.
Motorcycle collisions with automobiles or trucks cause severe injuries to operators and passengers because:
- Motorcycles Have Less Braking Power – Motor vehicles such as cars and trucks are equipped with much more powerful brake systems than motorcycles.
- Motorcycles Offer Less Protection For the Motorcyclist and Their Passenger – Cars and trucks are much safer than motorcycles because the occupants are protected by the frame of the car or truck. Also, most cars and trucks have safety features such as seatbelts and airbags.
- Motorcycle Riders Have Less Control Over Their Vehicle – One more reason why motorcycles are more dangerous than cars is steering capabilities. Motorcycles have extremely responsive steering when compared to motor vehicles. If an operator becomes startled, he or she could accidentally steer off of the road.
