LEE COUNTY, FL – According to Fox4now.com, a motorcyclist died in a crash with a pickup truck on Slater Road at about 7 in the evening. The victim, Mr. Henry, 27, was riding a KPX Enduro motorcycle in the northbound lanes when he was cut off by a pickup truck that was in the southbound lanes and turning left onto Rich Road.
Henry’s motorcycle struck the front end of the truck, and he was ejected from the bike and tossed into a ditch on the side of the road. The victim was declared dead at the scene of the crash.
Reports indicate that Henry was using a helmet at the time of the accident. According to the police, charges are pending in relation to the fatal accident, and the crash is still under investigation.
Motorcyclists have a far greater risk of being killed in a crash than occupants of other vehicles. Much of the risk is the result of the fact that their vehicle offers little in the way of protections. However, motorcycles are also at a greater risk of being involved in crashes. Drivers frequently fail to notice motorcycles because they are not as big as the other vehicles on the road. It is common for drivers to enter the path of a motorcycle and cause potentially deadly collisions.
Motorcyclists can increase their safety by using helmets, and by wearing bright, noticeable clothing. Helmets reduce the risk of death and brain damage, and bright clothes can help make the motorcyclist more noticeable to other drivers on the road.
It is also important that drivers remember to share the roadway with all vehicles and that motorcycles have as much of a right to the road as cars do.
