A Staten Island motorcycle crash
STATEN ISLAND, New York — A collision between a motorcycle and Ford sedan left the motorcycle rider clinging to life on Staten Island. According to SILIVE.com, officers from the New York Police Department and crews from the Fire Department of New York rushed to the scene around 10:00 p.m. The driver of the green Ford sedan did not attempt to leave the scene of the crash, which was located at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Clove Road in West Brighton. A spokesperson speaking on behalf of the New York Police Department said that the motorcycle rider received emergency transportation by ambulance to Richmond University Medical Center. The motorcycle rider is reportedly in critical condition.
Photographs taken at the intersection of Clove Road and Forest Avenue show the critically injured victim’s damaged motorcycle laying on its right side with a white helmet on the ground. The Ford Sedan is also visible in the pictures. From the photos, it appears that the motorcycle was turning right or going straight ahead and the Ford sedan was turning left when they collided.
The debris on the ground in the intersection shows that the force of the collision threw the bike several feet to the side. There is no indication of whether the motorcycle rider was violently thrown off of the bike or fell under it. The damage to the sedan appears to be on the right side of the front hood of the vehicle, where a large dent is visible. The intersection is fairly well lit and a stoplight controls the traffic lanes for each direction suspended over the middle of the intersection.
Statistically speaking, motorcycle riders are 35-times more likely to die in a crash than a person in a car. The most dangerous scenario for a bike rider is the left-turning car. Accidents in which a motorcycle rider is hit when a car is turning left makes up 42% of all motorcycle-auto collisions.
