Naples High School Student Struck by Car

NAPLES- According to ABC-7.com, a girl was struck by a vehicle near Naples High School after getting out of school on Thursday, November 1, 2018. The pedestrian accident happened on the Golden Gate Parkway.

The name of the victim and the extent of her injuries are not known at this time.

Thousands of people die in pedestrian accidents every year in the United States. The number of fatalities continued to rise in recent years and now appears to be staying in the range of 6,000 people killed annually. While pedestrian deaths have increased, motor vehicle occupants deaths have been declining.

Many new vehicle safety features work to protect people while they are in cars but make no difference to pedestrians who could be struck by those vehicles. Additionally, the United States automobile market has been shifting toward larger vehicles. SUV and truck purchases are outpacing cars, and some vehicle manufacturers are responding by stopping the production of many of their models of cars.

Pedestrians may be paying the price for America’s love of SUVs. These taller, heavier vehicles that have higher horsepower present a greater risk to pedestrians than do cars. The design of SUVs means that people who are struck by them get hit higher on their body by a flat front surface. This is more damaging than being struck by a car that often hits people in their lower body, causing injuries to the legs rather than the chest.

While pedestrians are faring worse nationally, some cities have implemented programs to increase pedestrian safety. The Vision Zero initiative in New York City has managed to drop pedestrian deaths in 2017 to the lowest number ever recorded. The success shows that there are roadway designs and laws that can be used to make people safer.
