EAST MEADOW, Long Island, N.Y. — According to LongIsland.com, Nassau County police detectives say that a 62-year-old man died when he lost control over his car and slammed head-on into a tree. The collision happened on Monday, November 12, 2018, around 6:45 a.m. Nassau County detectives continue to investigate.
The police continue to seek answers as to why 62-year-old Kenneth Moultrie formerly of Astoria drove his 2011 Ford across the opposite lane of traffic and into a tree. According to the detectives from Nassau County Police Department’s Third Squad, their investigation shows to this point that Mr. Moultrie drove his car northerly on Carman Avenue in East Meadow when he inexplicably drove across the southbound lane of traffic and into a tree about 6:45 a.m.
First responders and ambulance personnel raced to the scene to assist the trapped driver. The responding officers pulled Mr. Moultrie out of the wreckage. Emergency medical technicians transported Mr. Moultrie to a local trauma center. Physicians at the hospital pronounced Mr. Moultrie deceased a short time after his arrival at the hospital. Medical personnel said that Mr. Moultrie suffered substantial trauma to his body.
Police will try to learn why Mr. Moultrie drove across the road and into the tree. The results of an autopsy report have not been released by the medical examiner’s office at this juncture. However, one of the causes of such immediate loss of control for drivers, especially middle-aged men is a medical event like a heart attack, stroke, or seizure. The medical examiner should be able to determine whether any medical event preceded the crash.
Another common reason for the loss of control resulting in catastrophic accidents is driver fatigue. Since the crash happened at 6:45 a.m., detectives will certainly consider this possibility in their analysis of the crash. Additionally, distracted driving could also account for an extreme loss of control when driving.
