New moped ride sharing laws

New York City- A news report posted on msn.com states that do the New York City Council continues to make progress in its attempt to better regulate ride-sharing moped services in New York City. The moped ride-sharing services I’ve been under fire over the past couple of years due to safety concerns, improper use, and Ryder is not wearing helmets.

Last summer, there were three fatal moped accidents and several injuries reported. Revel, the ride-share moped service that was operating in New York City, was even fined and shut down by city officials for over a month. However, New York City officials did not have the legal authority to “Tell the company how to operate. ”

Last Wednesday, the New York City Council voted to pass changes and new regulations that would grant the Department of Transportation additional powers to regulate modes of transportation. According to the news report, the “moped safety and oversight Bill “bands the operation of a moped ride-sharing company from operating within New York City without the New York City Department of Transportation’s approval. The bill would also require the moped ride-share company to register every moped in the company’s fleet, ensure their mopeds cannot reach speeds over 30 mph, and monitor helmet use.

Mayor Bill de Blasio believes that the lack of training for the drivers along with a lack of helmet used created a significantly “dangerous environment.” The Mayor also expressed his disappointment that people are able to operate mopeds without having a motorcycle license. In obtaining a motorcycle license in the state of New York, operators are required to receive specialized training and pass especial motorcycle safety and traffic law exam. However, the majority of those using moped ride-sharing services do not possess a motorcycle license.

A spokesperson for Ravel stated that they were pleased with the passing of the new regulations. The spokesperson also stated that the company is committed to working with NYCDOT to provide better access to support the more than 400,000 New Yorkers who rely on their service for travel.

Rebels competitor Lime has begun to expand its fleets of ride-sharing mopeds in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Lime currently has about 100 mopeds in its fleet but expects to increase its fleet to over 500 mopeds in the next few weeks.

Cording to the DOT, the agency will begin drafting the new rules for ride-sharing moped companies in the next couple of months. The new ride-sharing Laws are set to take effect in 120 days.
