QUEENS, N.Y. — A seven-year veteran of the New York City Police Department sustained critical injuries from a severe car crash in Queens. The officer, who is reportedly 34-years-old, suffered massive head and neck injuries, according to the New York Daily News. The crash happened in the St. Albans neighborhood of Queens in the latter part of Friday evening. The current medical condition of the off-duty police officer has not been updated, and accident reconstruction officers with the NYPD Highway Investigation Squad have the matter under investigation. Criminal charges have not been sought in the case at this juncture.
The initial reports from NYPD say that the seven-year veteran of the force operated a Nissan Altima on Nashville Boulevard at the time of the crash. Two men riding in a Nissan Maxima sedan were on Lucas Street at the intersection with Nashville Boulevard when the officer’s Altima plowed into the Maxima. Officers described the crash as a “T-bone” collision.
After striking the Maxima, the officer’s Altima careened into two parked vehicles and then struck a telephone pole. The impact with the telephone pole snapped the pole near the base. The officer’s vehicle burst into flames.
Reports from the scene suggest the impact threw the officer out of his car and onto the street. First responders found the off-duty policeman alive, but unconscious. They reported the man suffered from severe head and neck injuries, although they did not specify the nature of the wounds.
The other men in the Maxima were also hurt. The driver of the Maxima is reportedly 28-years-of-age, and the passenger is 20-years-old. Both sustained injuries to their legs. Again, the exact nature of the injuries was not specified in the initial reports.
EMS medics raced all three injured motorists to Jamaica Hospital. The latest information released by Jamaica Hospital indicates that the officer was listed as stable but in critical condition. The hospital did not offer an update on the other two injured men.
