WOODBURY, NY- According to Longisland.com, a man was killed in a rollover crash that occurred at 5:20 in the evening in Woodbury, New York. According to police reports, the driver of a 2003 Ford Escape was driving southbound when it drifted off the roadway and rolled several times.
The victim, who was identified as 29-year-old Kenneth Glover of Brookhaven, was ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of the injuries that he sustained in the accident.
A passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The passenger sustained injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police are still investigating the Long Island accident.
Rollover crashes are dangerous and disproportionately deadly. While only a small number of total collisions involve a vehicle rolling over, about one-third of motor vehicle crash deaths are the result of these types of accidents. Part of what makes these crashes so deadly is that people are often ejected from their vehicles. People who are thrown from a vehicle in a crash have a low chance of survival.
Vehicle occupants who wear their seatbelts have much better chances of surviving rollover crashes because they are less likely to be ejected or to be thrown into the roof of the vehicle.
Although cars can roll in certain circumstances, rollover accidents are far more likely when vehicles have higher centers of gravity. Taller vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks are more likely to flip. People driving these types of vehicles should avoid overloading them and should not put heavy cargo on the roof because this can make the chance of rolling over even greater. Having well-maintained tires can also help lower the risks.
