WESTCHESTER, NY – According to Lohud.com, four vehicles were involved in a collision that closed one of Interstate 87’s northbound lanes. The crash led to long delays for commuters on Tuesday, December 18, 2018.
The crash happened after the toll barrier at about 5:12 p.m. One person was injured and was transported to the Nyack Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Evening rush hour is statistically one of the most hazardous times to drive. During the after-work rush to get home, between the hours of 4:30 and 6:59 p.m., many vehicles are on the road. While the same thing is seen in the morning while people are on their way to work, the rate of fatal crashes is about 85 percent higher in the late afternoon than it is during the morning between 7:00 a.m. and 9:59 a.m.
It is not entirely clear why the evening rush hour is so dangerous, but some theories include impaired driving, distracted driving, people in a rush to get home, and drivers who are frustrated by the heavy volume of cars on the road. It is possible that something about the state of mind of people as they leave work creates the difference between morning and evening rush hour crash statistics.
While weekday rush hours create some risks to drivers, it does not compare to the risks presented by weekend driving. Saturday is the most hazardous day to drive. In 2016, almost 7,000 people died on Saturdays, followed by Fridays. During weekend driving, there are more drivers engaging in dangerous behaviors and reckless driving. Drunk driving is also far more prevalent during the weekend.
